Kerry Ingredients gets EFSA backing for liquid form of chicken fattening additive

The liquid form of Kerry Food Ingredients feed additive, AGal-Pro BL-L, has received a positive opinion from EFSA for its use as a feed additive for chickens for fattening.

The product is a liquid preparation of alpha-galactosidase produced by a genetically modified strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and of endo-1,4-beta-glucanase produced by a non-genetically modified strain of Aspergillus niger.

EFSA’s Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) found that AGal-Pro BL-L is safe and efficacious for the target species at the dose range currently authorized for the product and is safe for the consumer and the environment.

The additive is already authorized in its solid form, AGal-Pro BL, for use in chickens for fattening, chickens reared for laying and minor poultry species for fattening as a zootechnical additive in the functional group digestibility enhancers.

But Kerry Food Ingredients was seeking the authorization of the liquid form as a feed additive for chickens for fattening at the same authorized dose range in terms of enzyme activity.

Performance studies

The company provided a total of four performance studies in chickens for fattening aimed at studying the efficacy of the product with the solid form of the additive.

These studies were previously evaluated by the FEEDAP Panel, which found the use of the additive in chicken diets has the potential to improve final body weight when used at the minimum dose proposed.

In the positive opinion on the liquid form published today, the EFSA experts say he conditions of use of the solid and liquid forms are the same in terms of enzyme activity in complete feed, and that they consider the two forms of the additive to be equivalent in terms of efficacy for the target species.

The Panel thus concludes the earlier efficacy finding can be applied to the liquid product.
