Professor Dr Hans Stein, from the University of Illinois, was judged the winner of the DSM Nutritional Sciences Award 2015, which carries a cash prize of €50,000.
An international judging committee, chaired by Dr Georg Kau, R&D VP at DSM Nutritional Products, selected the US academic from the candidates proposed via a public call for nominations.
The judges said Professor Stein’s research into determining amino acid requirements and optimizing calcium and phosphorous supply for growing pigs has helped reduce the excretion of undigested feed components, which are potentially harmful to the environment, and thus has greatly contributed to ensuring the sustainability of swine farming.
The DSM award is granted every two years, and alternates between the fields of human and animal nutrition.
In 2013, Dr Maret Traber, director of the oxidative and nitrative stress laboratory, at the Linus Pauling Institute in the US, won the prize for her achievements in the field of vitamin E research.
