Lallemand feed probiotics allowed to be used in organic farming in Australia

Lallemand Animal Nutrition says Australian Certified Organic (ACO), a non-profit subsidiary of Australian Organic Ltd, has recognized three feed ingredients - Levucell SC, Levucell SB and Agrimos - already used in the Australian livestock sector, as allowed inputs for organic farming.

Agrimos is yeast derivative containing a source of mannan-oligosaccharides, the company said it is designed to help to maintain optimal balance of beneficial microflora in the rumen. Levucell SB is a strain-specific live yeast that reportedly enhances the intestinal microflora of monogastrics, while Levucell SC is another strain-specific live yeast that has been developed to improve the health and performance of dairy and beef cattle.

Alex Turney, MD, Lallemand Animal Nutrition, Australia, said the certifications represent a major breakthrough for the use of probiotics and yeast derivatives in organic livestock production in that market.

In addition, Lallemand said the National Organic Program (NOP) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recognized the use of Levucell SC 20, Levucell SB 20 and Agrimos as general feed additives or animal health therapies.

The NOP also recognized Levucell SC 10 ME Titan and Levucell SB 10 ME Titan, two coated formulations for use in pelletized feeds and premixes, for use as animal health therapies, said the company.
