We track recent career moves at Nutreco and at the largest German feed manufacturer, DTC, as well as new hires in feed suppliers like AkerBioMarine, Wilbur-Ellis Nutrition, AB Vista and Corbion, along with the latest appointments at trade groups.

Nutreco has announced a number of changes in its Executive Committee (ExCo).

Harm de Wildt, Nutreco chief operating officer and CEO of Trouw Nutrition, will retire from the company. His role will be taken over by Saskia Korink, [pictured] who is currently innovation director at Trouw Nutrition.

At the same time, Nutreco’s chief innovation officer, Viggo Halseth, has announced he will step down from the ExCo. The idea is that he will focus completely on his current role of exploring opportunities in the area of alternative aquaculture farming, such as Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS). He will continue to report into Nutreco CEO, Rob Koremans.

In relation to the imminent exit of de Wildt, Koremans, commented:

“Harm has been a stalwart of the company for many years and his tireless enthusiasm and commitment has brought about lasting positive impact in Nutreco Over recent years, he has successfully introduced a Trouw Nutrition global strategy focused on nutrition, health and precision farming while developing an innovation strategy for the division. We will miss Harm and wish him all the best in future.”

Korink joined Nutreco just under two years ago as innovation director. She is said to have been pivotal in bringing R&D and marketing closer together and in the success of Trouw Nutrition’s newly-created species councils. Prior to joining Nutreco, she worked at Cargill for over 10 years in a number of roles, including as leader of the Latin American cocoa business and as global marketing director for Cargill’s Animal Nutrition business. She also held senior-level positions in a number of other companies, including chief operating officer responsible for ABS at Genus plc.

Aker BioMarine has appointed Christina Ianssen as its new manager of sustainability and public affairs.

She was previously senior advisor for the environmental foundation, Bellona. Prior to that, she worked for Sterling PBES, an energy solution provider for the maritime industry.

Ianssen holds a Msc in International Business and Politics from Copenhagen Business School, where she also obtained her Bachelor’s degree.

Runa Haug Khoury, director sustainability and public affairs, Aker BioMarine, said: “Sustainability is not about philanthropy to us, it’s a strategic priority to ensure the long-term profitability of our company.”

Corbion expands team as it looks to widen algae ingredient’s reach into other feed sectors

Corbion recently announced three new appointments to its algae ingredients team. The company said given “the proven success” of its ingredient, AlgaPrime DHA, in the salmon industry, the new team will continue to drive commercialization of omega-3 ingredients in the shrimp, marine fish, pet and livestock markets.

Ruud Peerbooms [pictured above] was named president of the algae ingredients division. In this role, he is tasked with driving strategic initiatives to expand Corbion's algae business, including overseeing the company's partnerships for the development of the next generation of algae ingredients. Peerbooms has spent most of his career in commercial roles in the specialty food ingredients industry; he joined Corbion in 2014 as senior vice president, food.

The other appointments include: Geir Ivar Lanes, who takes on the role of senior business development manager to lead the application of Corbion's AlgaPrime DHA ingredient in salmonid feed. Lanes has spent the past 21 years as managing director of Havbrukskontroll AS, a consulting company working with both aquaculture farmers and aquaculture suppliers within areas of broodstock, smolts, enclosed systems and sea cage production.  

And Paula Arriagada Strodthoff, who has been named senior business development manager in that team; she will work with salmon farmers and feed companies in Chile. She comes to Corbion with 19 years of experience in technical support for human and animal nutrition. She was formerly head of nutrition and technology for EWOS Chile, where she was responsible for developing field trials and nutritional solutions for salmonids.

There is new leadership at Germany’s largest compound feed manufacturing group, Deutsche Tiernahrung Cremer (DTC).

Ulrich Arning, who is managing director for production and administration, Dr Heinrich Kleine Klausing, [pictured above] who is managing director for product concepts and mineral feed, Thomas Bernsmann, who is managing director for sales and Miguel Diaz Martinez, who is managing director for purchasing and supply chain management, have all been named as members of the executive board of the Düsseldorf-based company.

DTC, which produces around 2.8m tons of compound feed per year in 14 production sites, is a subsidiary of Peter Cremer Holding.

The new leadership has extensive experience in the development, production and sale of feed and pet food.

"We are very happy about the development at the management level of Deutsche Tiernahrung Cremer," commented Dr Ullrich Wegner, CEO of Peter Cremer Holding. “We still have a lot of plans for DTC. The management [team] has many years of industry experience. This will enable us to successfully address the current challenges in the compound feed market.”

The UK Former Foodstuffs Processors Association (UKFFPA) committee has appointed John Knight as Chair.

He is currently technical and compliance director at former food processor, SUGARICH.

Knight has held numerous positions during his career with the UK agricultural supply industry. He started his career as a cattle specialist with Jas Wyllie & Sons, of the Cooperative Wholesale Society, based in South-West Scotland. When Dalgety purchased the business quite soon after, he became commercial manager for Southern Scotland purchasing raw materials, trading grain and selling fertilizer before becoming regional raw material manager for the mid-west region based at the Aston Feed Mill in Cheshire.

In 1999, he took on the role of manager, Roper Foods, a small former food processor, before joining AB Nutrition Ltd who trade in raw materials to and finished products from businesses operating in the former foods processing sector.

In his role of chair, he said he aims to:

  • represent the views and values of our members
  • build on the many advances we have made towards product safety, quality and consistency
  • drive towards sustainable manufacturing by increasing efficiency
  • enhance the understanding of our suppliers and customers to promote growth whilst further reducing waste

AB Vista has announced the addition of Dr Michelle Stewart as a technical services team member. She is focused on the monogastric business at AB Vista, supporting customers in determining how or why leg health issues evolve in the field.

Since joining, the company said Dr Stewart has already furthered the development of monitoring bone development from the hatchery to processing plants and hopes to reduce some causes of lameness that are costly to the industry.

Dr Stewart has worked at the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network. 

She has Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from the University of Georgia. She also recently graduated from the University of Georgia’s Masters of Avian Medicine program. 

Former Cargill animal nutrition executive joins Wilbur-Ellis Nutrition

Wilbur-Ellis Nutrition has announced that animal nutrition industry veteran, Gerardo Quintero, has joined the company as a vice president. 

Part of the Wilbur-Ellis Nutrition leadership team, he will be based in the Pacific Northwest of the US. 

Prior to joining Wilbur-Ellis Nutrition, Quintero was the European managing director for Cargill’s animal nutrition business and project manager of its transformation management office. 

He brings over 25 years’ experience in the animal nutrition and health business to his new role. 

Quintero has worked across several global markets throughout his career including Central and South America, Mexico, Europe and the US. 

Nutrition division president, Andrew Loder, outlined how Quintero’s background includes important capabilities such as P&L management and accountability, transformation management project leadership, strategy development and implementation and commercial team leadership.  

“All these are important capabilities as we look to continue innovatively growing our business.”

Roger Janson, Cargill, has been elected president of FEDIOL for a two-year mandate from 2020 to 2022.

FEDIOL, which is the association representing the EU vegetable oil and protein meal industry, confirmed the unanimous election of Janson at its AGM in Brussels on June 11.

Janson is group leader for Cargill’s Agricultural Supply Chain (CASC) Europe, Middle East and Africa. He joined the FEDIOL Executive Board in June 2015.

John Grossmann, who is currently president, oilseeds, EMEA, at Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), was elected vice-president of the trade group, after having served a two-year mandate as president.

FEDIOL said that, in the aftermath of the COVID19 crisis, which has shown the importance of a resilient food system, it will be actively engaged in the transition towards enhanced sustainability, as outlined in the recent EU Farm-to-Fork strategy.

It said it will look to address potential ambiguities in the plan to reduce the environmental impact of the food system, while at the same time ensuring a continuous supply to the food and non-food markets.

I look forward to engaging on the announced initiatives linked to the European Green Deal and to supporting the policy process together with the teams of FEDIOL experts," said Janson at the General Assembly meeting.

Commenting on the outlook of the challenges ahead, he added: “We are conscious of the responsibility of our industry in this green transition, and we will play our role in ensuring the implications of certain EU policy choices for our supply chains in Europe and beyond are understood and taken into account.”
