Dr Nuria Miquel has been named senior vice president and chief science officer at ADM, effective August 1.

ADM CEO, Juan Luciano, said that throughout her distinguished career, Miquel has demonstrated how "to bring together inspiring leadership and cutting-edge science to build high-performing R&D teams that transform new ideas into commercial products to drive growth.”

She started her career as a research scientist before progressing to leadership roles at Novozymes, Tate & Lyle, Chr Hansen and Hempel and joined ADM three years ago as leader of science and technology for the company’s nutrition segment.

Miquel earned her PhD from the University of Copenhagen and University of Bristol, on the effect of nutrition to immune responses in monogastric parasitic infections.

She will replace Dr Todd Werpy, who has announced his retirement after leading ADM’s R&D and innovation efforts for 16 years.

“Todd not only has impacted ADM – his leadership and cutting-edge research have profoundly changed many of the industries in which we operate,” Luciano said. “From alternative fuels to fermentation and synthetic biology, to our efforts to deliver low-carbon feedstocks to partners across multiple industries, Todd has been instrumental to our growth.”

Matz Beuchel has been appointed sustainable innovation program manager at the Dutch animal feed industry association, Nevedi.

That program sees the trade group collaborate on various climate, environment and raw material supply related projects with government and other stakeholders.

Beuchel, who was born in Germany and grew up in an agricultural environment, worked most recently as a senior animal protein analyst at Rabobank. He has a BSc and an MSc in management and economics, specializing in agricultural economics and rural policy, from Wageningen University.

Nevedi expects that Beuchel’s affinity with the agricultural sector and the knowledge and experience he acquired at Rabobank will support the association in its work on making animal production chains and the animal feed sector more sustainable.

Fixed Phage has appointed Dr Neil Clelland as its new CEO.

The biotech has also announced its new chief operations officer and executive chairman. These appointments, it said, strengthen the top management team, leading the company as it drives forward its new phase of growth and development.

Dr Clelland, formerly the business’s commercial director, takes over from outgoing CEO, David Browning, who has stepped down after almost four years in the role.

He brings extensive experience in business development, deal structure and company creation to the role, said Fixed Phage. Dr Clelland also has a strong record in identifying and developing innovative commercial opportunities within complex scientific output and environments, added the firm.

Commenting on his appointment, the new CEO said: “I am extremely excited to have taken up this position and look forward to building on David’s legacy to take Fixed Phage to even greater heights. The phage industry is thriving and there is so much potential in this company and the talents we have here to raise the bar in providing innovative solutions for human and animal health.”

The company, based in Glasgow, has also appointed Chris Bindon – formerly director of technical operations – as its new COO, and Simon Hunt, previously chairman, is now the biotech’s executive chairman.
