Agroloop to launch insect processing facility in Hungary, commissioning set for Q4 2024
“The project is progressing as planned, with commissioning expected to start in Q4 2024,” Rajmond Percze, co-founder and managing director of Agroloop, told FeedNavigator.
Technology supply
Leading suppliers WEDA, Bühler, and Reinartz have provided the key BSF rearing and processing equipment for the factory. WEDA is supplying proven conveyor technology to ensure reliable transport of substrates. “With a special control system, feed components can be combined from various storage containers, allowing Agroloop to produce the most cost-effective recipes based on requirements and stock levels,” explained WEDA.
Agroloop is utilizing Bühler’s nursery and rearing technology for insect growth, along with Reinartz's expertise in insect larvae dry processing.
Automation
The company aims to achieve a lower environmental footprint compared to conventional feed ingredients. “Our goal is to source low-value, feed-certified biomass locally and sell our products within the region. Additionally, our fully automated workflow and AI implementation will ensure the highest efficiency,” Percze stated.
The plant will use feed-certified raw materials as larvae rearing substrates, most of which will be collected within a 20km radius of the site in both liquid and solid forms, according to Percze.
Agroloop began its journey in 2017, participating in the Netherlands-based Climate-KIC Accelerator.
Offtake agreement
Agroloop has secured €20m (US$21.4m) in funding from four investors and UniCredit Bank. It has also signed a major offtake agreement with UBM, one of Hungary’s largest feed companies. “This strategic partnership means UBM will purchase the majority of Agroloop’s production until 2027,” noted Percze.
Looking ahead, Percze outlined that Agroloop’s short-term goal is to double production capacity at the current site and develop additional efficiency-boosting technologies, followed by expansion into Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).
